Verona/The Arena

Verona/The Arena

The Verona Arena (picture above) was built in the first century.  It is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large scale proformances held here. Opera, ballet and music concerts.

My reason for going to Verona when I did was to see my very favorite performer, Zucchero (Sugar). I have been a big fan for a couple years and a year ago when he announced he was going on a European tour of his new album,

Black Cat.with 11 nights at the Verona Arena I knew I was going.  This is way before I knew I would be moving to Italy.

I can’t remember ever being so excited about an event. I felt like 15 years old.  I went early so I could take in and enjoy the entire experience.  First stop was to buy a T shirt for me and my friend Paul Carrocino who introduced me to him.

They were doing a fun thing with taking your picture with his hat from the album cover. No way I wasn’t going to do that!

Walking around the arena and pinching myself at the same time.  Here I am in Verona at the world famous arena to see Zucchero, what could be better than that.  Everyone I came in contact with was fantastic, the crowd and the people working there.

All 11 nights were sold out. In fact he sold out all his concerts through out Europe

For this once in a life time event I splurged and bought front row seats and was so glad I did.  I mean “what the hell”.

In any minute it was going to start.  As you can see from the smile on my face I was pretty excited.

Besides being an incredible performer he writes most of the lyrics to the songs he sings.

Zucchero-Come in Love lyrics

Come in love – I feel you’re somewhere out there
Come in love – In this room there ain’t nothing here
Come in love – I know you’re out there somewhere
Come in love – Come in loud and clear
Come in love – Come in loud and clear

He sings in Italian and English, there is a mix on his albums. Since this was in Italy he sang mostly in Italian.

On my Apple Music app I have 242 songs on my Zucchero play list.

If you look really close at this picture you will see he has on a pair of Concerse red high top tennis shoes. To show you how crazy I am as soon as we got back to Firenze I ordered a pair.

Zucchero – Like The Sun (From Out Of Nowhere) lyrics

In this world – I am gonna walk
Until my feet – refuse to take me any longer
Yes i’ m gonna walk – and walk some more

And I will ask – everyone I meet
Ask till they tell me – ther’s no answers anymore
Yes i’m gonna ask – more and some more

And I will love somebody somewhere
Till my heart breaks – until it’s done
Until it explodes – from out of nowhere
Like the sun – like the sun

In this world – I am gonna sing
Until my voice – won’t be singing any longer
Yes i’m gonna sing – more and some more

He wrote the song Miserere (Have mercy) with Pavarotti in mind.  They recorded it and it was a huge hit and they became great friends.  This was a wonderful moment at the concert. He teared up at the end as well as everyone in the arena.

image

He never stopped for over 2 hours. His energy was limitless.

I am so happy to have been able to share this really fun night.

You look excited like a teenager at her first concert. Great! Life begins again any time you have a strong experience.
    Zucchero for ever.

I want to see you in those red shoes. I have been a Zucchero fan for years. I particularly love the Pavarotti/Zucchero combo. There was a PBS special on Pavarotti a few years ago (obviously before he died) and in that special they sang together…wonderful. Think you and Zoe will become groupies?

    Sally,
It’s good to hear from you. I spent the last week in Rhinelander. We had 6 inches of snow.
I’m back home now. Last night I fell in my shower and hurt my left shoulder. I saw our nurse Pract. this morning and went to the hospital for xrays. I don
    t have the results yet.

I am a long time fan as well. Are you going in September this year? I will be there the 22nd. I have a really funny story about my last trip in April to see him. Maybe sometime we can meet up in Florence (or you can come here to Lucca) and we can chat about our favorite Italian performer.
